What it is good at

  • A cordless body reaches the underside and the feet without a cable in the way.
  • Snap-on guard combs change the length without swapping the blade.
  • A single-speed motor is simpler to control on a pet who is unsure about clippers.

Check before you buy

  • Blade type, and whether replacements are easy to find locally.
  • Run time against the job: a full clip takes longer than a tidy-up.
  • How it sounds in the hand, because noise decides whether the pet tolerates it.

Who it is not for

Full clips on matted or double coats, which are a job for a professional groomer.

A clipper kit is usually bought for the small jobs: between the pads, around the feet, under the tail and along the edges where the coat grows over. A cordless body makes those places reachable without a cable pulling across the table.

Blades are the part that matters. Guard combs snap over the blade and set the cutting length, while the blade itself does the close work, and a spare blade keeps a session short when the first one warms up. Check that the blade type is one you can buy again, because a clipper with an unusual blade becomes a paperweight.
